Play COBB CAN MOVE Online — All Rules Explained & Survival Guide
COBB CAN MOVE is a top-down pixel-art survival horror game built around one idea: the rules change. Every level adds a new line to the list of things Cobb can do — see, hear, smell, reach, duplicate — and each addition forces you to throw out the strategy that worked a minute ago. It was made in about six days for Major Jam 7: Wild, where it took first place, and it holds a 4.7/5 average from over 700 ratings on itch.io. You can play it online free right here in your browser — no download required.
The Premise
You are working a dark, procedurally generated facility. Your job is to gather coal and get it onto the conveyor belt at the center of the map. Cobb is in there with you. At the start he is, in the developer's own description, like an animal on the hunt that is completely deaf and blind — for now.
That last part is the whole game. The jam this was built for set "unpredictable rules" as its limitation, and the design ran straight at it: the rule list is displayed to you, it grows as you progress, and it turns a harmless shuffling figure into something that can find you through three different senses at once. The title is the first rule, and it is a joke that stops being funny around level four.
All of Cobb's Rules
Rules stack. Each level you clear adds another one, and they do not go away. Here is what each one actually does:
- Cobb can MOVE — The starting rule, and it does nothing. It is purely aesthetic. Cobb moves. That is the entire threat, for now.
- Cobb can SEE — He notices you when your light level is high. The brighter you are, the further away he can spot you. This is the rule that makes your own lantern a liability rather than a tool.
- Cobb can HEAR — He gets told the position of sounds. Footsteps are quiet and only register up close, but something loud — a breaker, for instance — carries across the entire map. Flipping a breaker is effectively announcing your coordinates.
- Cobb can SMELL — He sniffs periodically, and each sniff gives him a general direction toward you. On its own it is the weakest sense, but the interval between sniffs shrinks as he gets closer — and at close enough range he stops sampling and simply rampages toward the scent.
- Cobb can REACH — His arms get longer. In practice this means more grab range and more speed on the grab itself. Gaps you used to be able to slip past are no longer gaps.
- Cobb can DUPLICATE — There is now more than one of him. After Level 5 the duplicates can stack, which means the corner you just checked is not necessarily still clear.
- Cobb can SNEAK — He becomes silent when he moves. You lose the audio cue you have been unconsciously relying on since level one.
- Cobb can STEAL — He picks up coal and food and moves it around, including taking coal back off the conveyor belt. Progress stops being something you can bank.
The rules are not only about Cobb. The game also adds constraints on your side as it escalates — freezing when you spend too long in low light, and a starvation timer that forces you to keep eating. These are what stop "hide in a dark corner and wait" from being a valid answer.
Structure & The Ending
- Level 2 always includes a sensory rule. This is guaranteed by design, so the difficulty ramp starts immediately rather than depending on luck.
- The final task is the batteries. Once four batteries are placed, the endgame triggers and the closing sequence at the blast furnace begins. Cobb moves slower during this final task — a deliberate concession from the developers.
- Level select unlocks after you beat the game once. From then on you can jump to any story mode level directly, which makes practicing a specific rule combination much less painful.
- There is an endless mode with progressive difficulty, on top of the story levels.
Survival Tips
- Rocks stun him. A direct hit stops Cobb for a short window. This was added in v1.6 and is the closest thing to a weapon in the game — it does not kill, it buys you a few seconds to get past. Rocks are also audible, so throwing one is not free.
- Read the rule list before you move. It is shown to you. The single most common way to die is playing level 5 with level 3 habits.
- Manage your light deliberately. Once SEE is active, brightness is a tradeoff, not an upgrade — but going fully dark starts the freezing timer. The game is built so that both extremes kill you.
- Treat breakers as an alarm. With HEAR active, a breaker is heard from anywhere on the map. Flip it and immediately move away from where you flipped it.
- Against SMELL, keep moving and keep distance. Sniffs only give a general direction, so a stale trail is survivable — but let him get close and the sniff rate spikes into a charge.
- Once STEAL is in play, deliver coal immediately. Hoarding a pile to run in all at once just gives him something to undo.

Conclusion
COBB CAN MOVE gets more out of one mechanic than most horror games get out of an entire bestiary. Watching the rule list grow is genuinely dreadful in a way that a scripted scare is not, because you can read exactly what is about to be done to you and you still have to walk back out there. Six days of work, a jam win, and a year of patches later, it remains one of the sharpest free horror games in a browser.
Cobb can move. Then he can see. Then he can hear. Keep up.
